Visiting McDonough . . .
Visitors to McDonough
find a rural community dotted with historical 19th century homes and buildings. The
General Store with its "cigar store" Indian and rocking chair on the front porch
seems much like it might have been when it was build in the 1830s.
The intersection of State Route 220 and County Routes 5 and 7
(referred to as "the 4 corners"), with the Northstar Cafe, General Store, Town Hall and Fire Station,
is the center of town activity. At the corner of routes 5
and 7 is the town insignia - a pine tree that once held the esteem title of tallest decorated
live Christmas tree
in New York State.
Approximately 5 miles to the east, is the remains of
another once bustling intersection in East McDonough. Today, the church is under private
ownership and the store is closed, but good food and brew can be procured at The Outpost -
a favorite stop for snowmobilers. About 2 miles off route 220, horse enthusiasts gather at
Russo's Tack Shack to the south and campers swim and hike at Bowman Lake State Park to the
north.
On the road between the two centers lies the majority of
residential development, a few farms, and miles of state forest. The old Civilian Conservation Core camp
has been revitalized to accommodate hikers and picnickers and a bulletin board notifies
visitors of events.
When visiting the area, take advantage of numerous
dining
and lodging opportunities and attend some of the county's numerous events and attractions.
