McDonough is surrounded by
thousands of acres of uninhibited state forest, dotted with
bass ponds and crisscrossed with trout streams. Trail seekers have
access to hundreds of miles of multi-use and specific trails and can
find lodging in state lean-tos and camp sites. Several larger lakes
offer boating, swimming and other water sports.

The McDonough State Forest Management
Unit is located within the townships of McDonough, Preston and
Smithville in western Chenango County. Situated east of the hamlet of
McDonough and bisected by NYS Route 220, the Unit consists of four State
Forests and one State Park with a total of 13,781 acres under
management.
