Beauty,
Serenity ~ Outdoor Recreation at its Best!
Nestled in the hills of the western portion of Chenango
County, McDonough offers central New York visitors and residents picturesque views, summer
and winter fun, and a short travel to peak tourist attractions. Although far from
the bustle of city life, there is no lack for culture and services.
Centrally located, McDonough offers abundant opportunity
for independent-minded business. Primarily, business is service and manufacturing
oriented, but an unique artistic community provides a wealth of cultural treasures from
hand-crafted jewelry and furniture to sculpture and literature.
Home to some of the best fishing and recreational areas in
New York State, McDonough abounds with year-round opportunities. Bowman Lake State
Park offers fishing, boating, camping, bicycling and year-round hiking. Several
private lakes offer serene retreats from city life. There are numerous stocked
fishing ponds and streams. At the cross-roads to the Adirondack and Catskill
Mountains, there are thousands of acres of state forest for hiking, cross-country skiing,
snowmobiling, and hunting. The thick forests team with a variety of small and large
game animals and the Finger Lakes Hiking Trail winds its way though the picturesque
countryside.
Agriculture has long been a backbone of the
community. Today, although agriculture is on the decline, many of the farms remain -
some as summer havens, others as working farms. Cattle, horses, and sheep dot
rolling hill meadows and the smell of fresh cut hay fills the air on early summer days.
The entire Town of McDonough is in an Agricultural District offering
benefits to anyone that operates an agricultural business, full or
part-time.
The community shares its rural wealth with all who venture
into this magnificent countryside. We welcome you and your family and friends and
hope that you enjoy our little corner of the world.
