Where to Ride

A trail ride area is located on State Route.12, approximately 3 miles north of Oxford, NY. (Just North of Turner Street and Stonehouse Auto.) Sponsored by the Oxford Grange, the trails are open to the public two weekends each year (see events section for more info.

Currently, the use of ATVs on state lands surrounding McDonough is prohibited except in certain special circumstances.

News and General Information           top

Currently, there are no designated State public trails in the McDonough area for ATV use and  organizations are coordinating efforts with the DEC to establish new trails. However, there are trails available on public lands, organized rides, and miles of dirt roads winding through State Forests that are used for riding. Contact local clubs for more information on organized rides and private trails.

2004 - The DEC has set aside an area in the southwest corner of Chenango County that will be the designated ATV trail system in central NY. Updates will be posted as progress is made.

3/14/04:   NYS Department of Motor Vehicles has made a decision to freeze current ATV registrations until the State Budget issue is resolved (recall the proposal to raise registration from $10/yr. to $45/yr and change the annual term start/end date to September 1.

1/29/04: Governor Proposes Registration Fee Increase to $45 and Funding of a New Trail Program under the Authority of DEC.

On July 4, 2003 New York’s first statewide ATV/OHM trail network was opened to riders who have purchased a “Trail Pass” from a dealer or online at www.trailpass.com. TrailPass LLC, private company, has figured out a way to insure clubs and private landowners and to provide trail funding to clubs, despite the State’s continuous failure to accommodate the ATV/OHM user community in ways all other types of trail users have been. Now clubs have the tools to finally set about the process of developing private-land trail systems across the state, without government help. And individual riders benefit by having a growing number of diverse and dispersed areas to ride legally when they purchase a TrailPass™.
